GR Psychology Solutions – Bio

Gayle Roe has a Bachelors of Psychology, a Masters of Forensic Psychology, and a Masters of Public Health.  Gayle is a clinical psychologist and a psychology forensic registrar, whom has specialisations in the treatment methods of trauma, and has over 25 years’ experience.  As an Aboriginal woman from the Wangan and Jagalingou mob, Gayle started the first six years of her career supporting her community in managing their trauma.  Following this introduction to mental health services, she spent 12 years working within the Department of Defence, and with the Townsville Veteran community.

Gayle has been a supervisor for over 25 years delivering the 4+2, 5+1, and clinical registrar programs, as well as supervising students on placement, giving specific direction on Aboriginal and forensic issues.

She has also lectured at Universities as a lecturer and as part of a team developing postgraduate subjects for rural and remote health providers.  She then spent 3 years working at headspace Townsville as a child and adolescent trauma clinician; this is where she found her passion for working with children.

Now Gayle works independently where she has special interest in the following areas:

·       Assessments for Child Safety (e.g., parental capacity assessment, guardianship assessment, and diagnosis of children in care)
·       Assessment and diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders in children
·       Assessment of adults that have been arrested for sexual offences to then appear as an expert witness in court
·       Assessment of children with their capacity to give evidence
·       Assessment of individuals with their capacity to stand trial
·       Assessment of an individual’s recidivism
·       Reports for court (family, mental health, and criminal)

What is a clinical psychologist?
As clinical psychologists, we provide a wide range of psychological services to individuals for mental health conditions that range from mild to severe and complex. As well, may be involved in research, teaching and supervision, program development and evaluation, public policy and other activities. Clinical psychologists are trained in the assessment and diagnosis of mental illnesses and psychological problems and are qualified to provide advice in clinical and compensation areas. Using a range of techniques and therapies, we tailor programs to treat complex clinical psychology problems requiring individually tailored treatment. All clinical psychologists undertake continual learning in areas such as prevention, diagnosis, assessment, and treatment, including rehabilitation.

What is a forensic psychologist?
As forensic psychologists use their legal and psychological knowledge to help individuals, government employees and organisations navigate the legal and criminal justice systems.

In legal proceedings, they use scientifically based principles to assess a client, collect evidence that relates to the psychology of the person, and table a report. The report is then used in evidence. You would engage a forensic psychologist for areas that include but are not limited to child protection, family services, alcohol and other substance abuse, rehabilitation services (such as pain clinics or head injury services), and research.
